文房四宝 wénfánɡ sìbǎo noun four treasures of the study 文房四宝The tools and materials used in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. The four treasures are the writing brush (笔), ink (墨), paper (纸) and inkstone (砚). The brush is made up of a shaft and a head made of weasel hair, etc. The ink is made from a black lump of coal or pine soot. The most famous paper is xuan paper (宣纸), produced in Xuancheng in Anhui Province. The inkstone is made of stone and is used as a surface for grinding the soot with water to make ink. |
