旗袍 qípáo noun cheongsam 旗袍A woman's garment dating from the Qing Dynasty. Manchus were known as qiren (旗人), which forms the origin of the word. The dress became popular among women after the 1911 Revolution, and was fashionable in the 1930s and '40s. The qipao is tightly fitting and has a high collar, buttons on the right, and slits up either side. The front of the garment may be edged and embroidered. The height of the collar and the length of the sleeves and the dress have varied greatly throughout different periods. |
