佛塔 fótǎ noun pagoda ▸ 修建佛塔 build a pagoda 佛塔A place for worship and for storing Buddhist relics (bones of the Buddha), Buddhist images, sutras, and the remains of monks. Pagodas evolved from Indian stupas. From the end of the Han Dynasty, Chinese pagodas have consisted of a crypt, often referred to as an underground palace, a base, the body of the pagoda, and the top surmounted by a Buddhist temple made up of a pedestal, a lotus, an alms bowl, a wheel, and a precious pearl. There are usually an odd number of storeys. The underground palace, where the relics are stored, is directly under the base of the pagoda. |
