八旗 bāqí noun ‘Eight Banners’ 八旗The Manchu administrative, social and military system established in 1601 by the Manchu leader Nurhachi (努尔哈赤). Named after eight coloured flags, banner companies became instrumental in the establishment of the Qing Dynasty in 1644. However, at the end of the Qing Dynasty the banners declined as an effective fighting force, with the next generation degenerating into privileged good-for-nothings. |
