黄帝 Huánɡdì noun Yellow Emperor ▸ 黄帝陵 Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor 黄帝Huangdi (literally, ‘Yellow Emperor’), the common ancestor of the peoples of the central China plain, according to tradition. Huangdi defeated the Yandi tribe, and formed an alliance to vanquish ignorant tribes. Huangdi and Yandi are regarded as the founders of China. Chinese people are therefore known as the descendants of Yan and Huang (炎黄子孙). Many things are believed to have been initiated during the time of Huangdi, such as Chinese medicine and the cultivation of silkworms. |
