窑洞 yáodònɡ noun cave dwelling ▸ 住窑洞 live in a cave dwelling 窑洞A type of housing found in the countryside on the loess plateau of north and north-west China. Cave dwellings are either dug out of a natural cliff face (靠崖窑) or out of the wall of a deep pit (地坑窑). They usually have an arched entrance, and extend back about three metres. Cave dwellings are simple and cheap to build. They are fire-proof and sound-proof, cool in summer and warm in winter. |
