盆景 pénjǐnɡ noun bonsai 盆景An artistic miniature landscape in a pot, using trees, flowers, grass, stones, water and earth. The art of penjing originated in China, and later spread to Japan (where it is known as bonsai). There are two types of penjing: tree stump and landscape. Skilfully pruned miniature trees are the main element used in the former; stones, water and earth are used in the latter. The main schools of penjing are the Lingnan school of Guangdong and Guangxi, the Chuan school of Chengdu and Chongqing, and the Hai school of Shanghai. |
