Each syllable is made up of an initial consonant, a vowel and a tone mark. In standard Chinese there are 21 consonants, 35 vowels and 4 tones consisting of an upper even tone, a rising tone, a falling-rising tone, and a falling tone, which are marked above the vowel. Neutral tones are not marked. Hanyu Pinyin was officially adopted on the Chinese mainland in 1958 and assumed as the international standard for written Chinese in 1982. On January 1st 2009 it was adopted as the official system of Romanization in Taiwan. |
