A kang normally consists of three connected parts: the stove, the platform itself, and the flue. The stove is used for cooking, and the platform, kept warm by the heat from the stove, is used for sitting or sleeping on. The saying ‘having a wife, children and a warm kang’(老婆孩子热炕头) is used to refer to someone who has no ambition or ideals and is satisfied with very little. Kang were already widely used in the Sui and Tang dynasties. |
