Qi means ‘air’and, by extension, life breath or energy. Gong means skill. There are five main schools of qigong: the Medical, which concentrates on prevention and cure of illness; the Confucian, which is concerned with the cultivation of one’s moral character; the Taoist, which focuses on both body and spirit; the Buddhist, which works on freeing the heart and mind, and the Wushu, which practices physical exercise and self-defence. |
