胡同 hútònɡ noun hutong胡同Beijing's lanes and alleys. In the past, Beijing was made up of neat rows of thousands of courtyard houses. For ease of entry and exit, there were passage ways, known as ‘hutongs’, between the rows. The word hutong first appeared in the Yuan Dynasty during the construction of Dadu (大都, present-day Beijing). Hutongs and courtyard houses (→ 四合院) are symbols of Beijing vernacular culture. Beijing people have a special affection for them. In the latter part of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st many hutongs disappeared to make way for new roads and modern buildings. |
